Shop Building Addition for Spencer Spit State Park, Lopez Island, WA: 2005 - Spencer Spit's shop building houses the Ranger's offices, maintenance shop, equipment storage and Park Aid housing. The existing building had been built in the early 1970's and the park had outgrown it in many ways. The staff had grown and the number and size of park equipment had grown too.
Wayne Haefele & Associates volunteered to design an addition to the existing building to relieve this. The addition held a new ranger's office with laundry, ADA bathroom and shower adjacent and an additional covered storage area with two bays 10' high to the bottom of the trusses.
The construction was conventional light wood frame with truss roof on a stemwall foundation. The wall and roof sheathing was ADA plywood throughout with a standing seam metal roof. Maximized openings for the storage bays was achieved by using the roof as a flexible diaphragm to carry unbalanced lateral forces to ground through torsional shear.
The construction was also accomplished primarily with volunteer labor, and consequently took several years to complete.
Wayne Haefele & Associates created the layout and designed the building addition, plumbing and electrical systems.
