During his college education he developed this ability to its fullest. His concentration is in physics and math. This field required that he learn in depth about physical systems and the mathematics that govern them. This knowledge base allows him to quickly assess situations and come up with appropriate and efficient designs. He also has advanced computer skills that are employed in keeping the company's IT systems on the cutting edge and user friendly.

Wayne Haefele & Associates, Inc (WHA) is a closely held engineering corporation working primarily with small to medium sized utilities and larger consultants on design and construction management of potable water and wastewater facilities for local agencies. Matthew has been drafting and doing field technicians work regularly since 2005. Some of the highlights are:

He made the changes to the Friday Harbor WWTP Improvements drawings, converting them to project Record Drawings for Brown and Caldwell. In summers of 2005 and 2006 he also went to Santa Barbara to help with the Rancho Monte Alegre project, working with WHA and MNS. He took field measurements and did drafting in support of additional design and field changes during construction.

July through September of 2008 Matthew worked as a field technician on the Waterfront Sewer Replacement Project for Friday Harbor, diving in the harbor daily to help perform inspections and take "as built" measurements for the new submarine pipeline.

In 2010 Matthew made drawing sheets of catch basin construction details for the Lopez Village Storm Drain Improvements Project for San Juan County Public Works, assisted with inspections for the Front Street Water Main Project for Friday Harbor and was very involved with completing the Wastewater Treatment Plant Odor Control Project for Friday Harbor, helping to complete the drawings, designing additional equipment hoods and re-calculating static pressure losses in the foul air ducts.

His activities at UW required Matthew to become very proficient in Linux and Unix programming along with computer networking. Since graduation he has taken the IT lead for WHA, purchasing and setting up a secure server, enabling FTP and client access to documents via the website and creating virtual machines on the server which allow us to access and work on documents via remote desktop from anywhere in the world!

One of his first assignments was in public right of way, setting panel targets for an aerial survey. He then went out on a three man survey crew as rodman for a hydrographic survey of Atascadero Creek (Goleta, CA) for Santa Barbara County Flood Control. He also participated in several survey jobs on private estates in the foothills taking site measurements and mapping the results in AutoCAD.

While in the office he was assigned AutoCAD mapping tasks for a variety of projects.
