Wayne Haefele & Associates, Inc. has been in business since 2001, but we have over 30 years of industry experience. We have completed projects in California and mainland Washington, although our recent focus had been in the San Juan Islands.
Our business concentrates on public works and civil engineering, although we also do structural work for architects and occasionally work for business clients on commercial building projects. We work extensively with state permitting agencies and local building departments during design and understand the role and limits of the building (and other) codes concerning these kinds of construction.
With few exceptions, we complete our contracts without subcontractors. Because of this, we are able to deliver prompt and accurate information to clients upon request without complication from outside parties. We enjoy the independence and control that comes with being a small, personal business.
Providing quality service to our clients has ensured a steady stream of repeat business. Our clients know they receive the most experienced professional service our company can offer when they do business with us because there IS no “B Team”. We do a wide range of public works projects efficiently and well. Time is taken to communicate with operation and maintenance staff in every facility we work on. The end result is satisfying and functional, not just satisfactory. Our low overhead lets clients expect a comparatively modest billing rate for the highest-quality professional services.
The company produces engineering drawings using AutoCAD and Autodesk Civil 3D. We extensively use mobile workstations and electronic technology to perform work and stay connected with team members and clients. All project documentation is available to us at any time, whether in the office or in the field.

I began my Civil Engineering career in 1990 after a decade in aerospace. Working for a medium sized Civil Engineering firm in southern Indiana. I became licensed in 1994. From the beginning my work has revolved around water and wastewater in both Public Works and private settings. This has allowed me to become knowledgeable and proficient in related areas such as building design, electrical power distribution and controls. I eventually moved to California where I worked for another medium sized firm, continuing with water and wastewater projects and gaining experience with roadway and paving design. While with this firm I was licensed as a mechanical engineer as well and was resident engineer/inspector for water and wastewater upgrade projects and municipal paving projects. This continued after my move to Washington where I did many municipal designs and served as resident engineer on many projects for Town of Friday Harbor as a consultant before becoming the Town’s Public Works Director. As Public Works Director I designed and managed a wide variety of municipal projects and was generally in charge of all Town utilities while I continued doing projects for private clients and other municipalities. In 2022 I left the Town to resume consulting full time where I concentrate my efforts working with small Districts, contractors and private clients

My enthusiasm and commitment to excellence have served me well. I have extensive experience with project management, project inspections, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and I'm well versed with the remaining civil engineering branches. I had the chance to significantly develop my civil engineering skills and knowledge while working at Krazan & Associates as an EIT as well as my environmental and management experience at AECOM. My Public Works experience comes from various multi-million-dollar Public Works Road Projects for the State of California, and from the last seven years working for the Town of Friday Harbor under the guidance and directive from the former Public Works Director and Town Administrator. My Supervisory and managerial experience ranges from two to sixty crew members. I have managed crews from various industries such as marine underground boring, mechanical, underground, masonry, concrete, crane operators, paving, pipe layers, excavating crews, and non-invasive concrete dam restoration crews.
